How long have you been a fisherman for?
I have been fishing since my early childhood and been working in the maritime industry my whole adult life.
How did you become a fisherman?
I’ve always wanted to be a fisherman when I was a child, just like my dad. It was not until my first trip, when I was 10 years old, that I realized how rough it was out there on the ocean. I got so sea sick during the trip and couldn’t leave the bed and thought I was going to die. I realized then that fishing may not be in my future. Two years later, I got asked to go out to sea again by one of dads captains, I accepted the offer to go. The sea was calm and the fishing was unreal we had whale sharks everyday around the boat and tuna were jumping everywhere I had never seen anything like it. I had a completely different view on the ocean and wanted to work on it.
What’s the best thing about fishing?
Fishing is a very hard job, one of the hardest you can work. We can work up to 23hrs a day in some of the roughest conditions possible. The best think about fishing is completing each trip when you have a good catch and feeling satisfied with what you have achieved.
What’s your favourite fish and why?
My favourite fish would have to be Big Eye tuna. They are great to eat and a difficult fish to catch
What do you do in your free time?
Just for something different – fishing and spearfishing.
What do you love about Cairns?
The climate, and the proximity to the Great Barrier Reef and the fishing and diving that is so close
